Nelson Mandela Prison Watercolours to be Sold as NFTs

A collection of watercolor paintings by Nelson Mandela will be sold as NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. The artwork was created under Mandela’s supervision in prison during his 27 years behind bars, and features many different scenes from around South Africa.

The “Nelson Mandela Prison Watercolours to be Sold as NFTs” is an artwork that will be sold on the blockchain. The paintings are by Nelson Mandela and they are watercolors.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela’s paintings created while imprisoned on Robben Island are being digitalized and marketed as NFTs. The ‘My Robben Island’ collection will include five watercolours and a handwritten message penned by the legendary anti-apartheid hero.

On March 9th, fine art auctioneer Bonhams will sell the NFTs via the Nifty Gateway platform. Onlookers may purchase one of the individual paintings for $699 or the whole collection for $3,495 if they like. The six-hour auction will decide the size of the My Robben Island collection based on the number of NFTs sold (with there being a maximum of 10,000 to be issued).

The watercolours were created as a therapeutic exercise in 2002 under the supervision of art instructor Verenka Paschke and will portray different aspects of Mandela’s 18-year incarceration on Robben Island. ‘The Cell,’ which depicts the interior space where Nelson Mandela spent much of his time (and which has since become a place of pilgrimage for many), ‘The Window,’ which depicts Table Mountain against a backdrop of distinct orange cell bars, and ‘The Harbour,’ which depicts the image of the prison that new inmates see when they arrive on the island by boat.

The paintings ‘The Lighthouse’ and ‘The Church’ depict two more Robben Island monuments, both of which were off-limits to convicts. The collection will also feature ‘The Motivation,’ a handwritten essay that describes Mandela’s image of the island jail, and all six digital pieces will include Mandela’s signature.

Due of her father’s uncertainty about whether he’ll ever be freed while creating the works, Makaziwe Mandela, the former president’s daughter, characterizes the collection as a victory of the human spirit. Mandela has subsequently said that she hopes that part of the proceeds from the NFT sale would be used to fund the creation of a memorial garden in Qunu, where her father is buried.
