One of the most talked about pieces was Madonna’s NFT, a golden disco ball. The collection fetched more than 300 ETH at auction and made headlines around the world with its controversial celebrity buyer.

You’ve definitely heard of Madonna and Beeple’s ridiculously esoteric ‘Mother of Creation’ NFT project by now, unless you’ve been living under a rock. The three-part collection was released last week to considerable fanfare, and despite being the subject of much criticism, the NFSW collection produced a phenomenal main auction sales volume of over 300 ETH ($612,000).
Through its massive 170 ETH ($347,000) sale, ‘Mother of Nature,’ which shows a nude 3D Madonna giving birth to a tree inside a research facility, was rated the most sought-after of the three assets. The other two NFTs, ‘Mother of Evolution’ and ‘Mother of Technology,’ also fared well, with a combined sales volume of more over 130 ETH ($265,000).
The project elicited a mixed response, with some community members describing it as expressive, daring, and unapologetically on-brand with the material girl’s controversial essence, while others assimilated its 3D artwork to the aesthetics of the PlayStation 2, as well as lacking originality and innovation, as expected given its provocative nature.
Furthermore, despite the project’s stated focus on the essence of female, Ting Song, a crypto artist and creator of the Tin Museum, couldn’t help but question Beeple’s masculine influence: “I watched it a few times. In reality, I believe that the work’s aesthetic expression isn’t very ‘feminine.’ To some sense, it seems more like a tech-world male point of view.”
Regardless of whether you believe the project is beneficial or harmful to the public’s perception of NFTs (as a result of Madonna’s mass appeal, the collection made many a mainstream headline), Madonna and Beeple’s commitment to donating the collection’s $612,000+ proceeds to charity undeniably makes it one of net positives, implying that while criticizing its artwork may be valid, criticizing its existence should not.
