It is not a stretch of the imagination to say that music could be on its way out. MP3’s, streaming services and downloads have taken away from listening habits which used to give artists their livelihood. Nowadays you are more likely to find headphones in your pocket than an album by your side.
However it seems as though there has been a shift back towards physical media with recent releases like The Beatles’ new box set or Beyoncé’s Lemonade pack-in vinyls, but how long will this trend last?
As we see these signs emerging, one group believes they might be able to save music for good – DAOnload: MODA DAO!▬
The “future songs 2020” is a song by MODA DAO, which was released in May of 2019. The song is about the future and how music will evolve over the next few years.
The difficulties faced by musicians in the music business have been extensively chronicled for almost a century, and although technical breakthroughs have been made, some believe that nothing has changed. Is it due to the fear of change? Or do the ecosystem’s members perceive an insurmountable challenge in establishing a fair division of cash earned by their music?
The only way to “make it” in the music business used to be to get signed to a big label and then raised to star status via a succession of contacts and influence. Musicians may now follow Kevin Kelly’s 1,000 True Fans model, which entails developing a community of 1,000 individuals who believe in you and your talent in order to make enough money to support yourself. For these artists, Web3 provides comparable options.
One of the DAOs I’ve been monitoring goes a step farther.
MODA DAO was founded by Joel Zimmerman (deadmau5), Dean Wilson (mau5trap), Inder Phull (Pixelynx), and other transdisciplinary music industry professionals with the sake of transformation. MODA DAO’s goal is guided by a concept known as Music3, which is described in detail in their whitepaper.
Music3 is a catch-all term for a new collection of linked technologies, initiatives, enterprises, ideas, and philosophies aimed at leveraging Web3 distributed technology for the goal of creative empowerment and deeper connections between musicians and fans.
The purpose and organizational approach of MODA DAO are both attractive. Following their assessment of the whitepaper, they plan to analyze the structure of the music business if they were to start from scratch, as well as strategies to integrate old systems into the new framework.
Their study highlights the present systems’ complexity, as well as the lack of transparency and inefficiencies in administrative operations, as well as the fragmented data structures that obscure the genuine value of music. MODA DAO began by establishing the MODA Foundation, which assisted them in assembling a core team and providing a practical means of interacting with the present business community.
Many individuals who are unfamiliar with DAOs see them as purely computer-run entities, but others see a spectrum of structure that begins with a group of people and matures into a community before reaching the amount of automation that best suits its objective.
The Structure of MODA DAO
Members (those holding 5 tokens), Creators (those holding 10 tokens with Twitter verification), Ambassadors (those holding 100 tokens with 3 month membership and KYC), and Custodians (those holding 100 tokens with 3 month membership and KYC) are all positions in the MODA DAO (those holding 1,000 tokens with 6 month membership and application approval). The MODA Foundation originally established eight Custodian posts, with one chosen from the community. Each year, a community member will be added as a Custodian.
The Custodians will serve on the MODA Foundation’s advisory council, which will offer updates to the whole community. MODA Foundation members will be replaced by MODA DAO Custodians as the community expands, until the spectrum has changed from foundation to DAO.
A Member or Creator may make a formal proposal to Ambassadors for consideration if they have an idea. If the Ambassador approves of the suggestion, it will be added to Snapshot for review by the Custodians.
The Music3 strategy is aligned around layers called Creator, Industry, Platform and Consumption, while describing the current challenges within those layers. MODA DAO applies three pillars (MODA Publishing, Music3 Tools & Standards, and Innovation Lab) to research and develop solutions to those challenges.
Layer of the Creator
They began their first project to develop a fingerprinting system to monitor music in the Web3 environment in June 2021. Today, they are nearing the release of Genesis NFT, a version that will enable creators to directly submit their music files. MODA DAO’s tool creates a frequency versus time graphic that indicates peaks or unique occurrences in the audio on the map after it’s been uploaded.
Based on 50 ms scanning via the MODA DAO algorithm, the outcome is a visual depiction of the song’s aural elements. The peaks or unique occurrences are saved as a pattern of red dots and aligned up with the vocal stems after the scan is finished. The blockchain team receives this information and uses it to generate the NFT.
These data points are represented by a circular representation that resembles a fingerprint and appears like a vinyl record. They seek to include ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) and the ISWC as part of their objective to connect the legacy components of the industry into Web3 (International Standards Work Code). As a Web3 bridge, imagine something like this being able to search and onboard all accessible old material.
Layer of Industry
Some of the world’s best music managers are already members of MODA DAO, and they view it as a way in since music managers are in charge of most or all parts of an artist’s relationship with the label, publisher, PR, booking, and industry organizations.
Manufacturing, packing, and delivery expenses were all substantial when the labels were really creating tangible items. The basic agreements between labels and artists did not alter when the music business transitioned to digital, and these expenditures became margin for the labels.
The present approaches for tracking and managing music through the economic experience are complicated, to say the least. Layer of the Platform
While most, if not all, artists are welcome on existing platforms, an equal division of streaming money is still a long way off. The majority of the money goes to big label musicians, while most independent artists are left wanting more. Furthermore, present platforms create an unneeded barrier between the artist and the audience.
MODA DAO’s research and development started with an examination of how producers really record music. They suggest that tackling correct, blockchain-based information at the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) level may eliminate some of the administrative inefficiencies. I’ve frequently considered expanding the “export as” option to allow NFT in addition to WAV, MP3, MOV, and other formats. It might facilitate more fluid collaborations while providing accurate and useable data to a data ecosystem, resulting in new efficiencies in a slow-moving administrative procedure.
Layer of Consumption
Consumers of music are undoubtedly one of the most important pieces in the value chain, since composers would be unable to commercialize their work without them. The requirement for artists to own their own relationship to their audience drives MODA DAO’s approach to this layer. Their NFT Music Aggregator, which permits streaming of music NFTs from numerous NFT platforms, is one of the ways they reach out to customers.
When it comes to change, it’s sometimes preferable to select a point in the future and construct your own version of the present. The Music3 whitepaper by MODA DAO paints a picture of the music business in 2030. This vision of the future depicts all artists carrying a wallet containing all of their songs and performances, complete with precise information, allowing them to navigate the Web3 world with ease. Creators have access to open-source tools and libraries from other creators, and cooperation is mostly automated thanks to a network of smart contracts that gather information.
